19 February 2024 at 07:30 Have sent an invitation to the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, President of Ukraine, has been invited to the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Eastern Finnmark. Finnmark County Council confirms this in a press release.
County mayor Hans-Jacob Bønå (H) announced that he would invite the president at the end of 2023. The celebration will take place at the end of October this year.
- I invite Zelensky to show our support for the Ukrainian people and their struggle for freedom. I would also like to focus on the fact that we as a nation have a lot to thank Ukraine for. Put into perspective, it was not long ago that Ukrainian soldiers fought to free Norway from the ravages of the Nazis up here. I want to acknowledge that. Now they are under attack from a totalitarian state and need our help, says Bønå on Finnmark County website.
The invitation was sent via the Ukrainian embassy on Friday 9 February and has been confirmed received.
- Of course, I have every possible understanding that President Zelensky is fighting a war at this moment and is under pressure that few of us can fathom, but I of course hope that he, or someone he appoints, will mark the liberation in Eastern Finnmark together with us in autumn, says Bønå.
