Children lives in deadly areas

Almost five years of conflict has affected 5.2 million Ukrainians. Despite growing needs, the conflict in eastern Ukraine continues to be a forgotten crisis.

200,000 children go to classes every day in high-risk areas that are being bombed or where landmines have been planted.  Toretsk secondary school #7 is located in the village of Druzhba just shy of 10 kilometres away from the military positions in Eastern Ukraine. A total of 133 children go to school here. Some three years ago, more than 200 students attended this school. Due to the armed conflict, many families had to flee this dangerous area.

Landmines pollute many of the open spaces where children play, putting about 220,000 children at risk.

Truce agreements have reduced fighting in Ukraine's war, which started in 2014 following Russia's annexation of Crimea. Kyiv and its Western allies accuse Russia of funnelling troops and arms across the border. Clashes still erupt. Rockets and shelling remain threats for towns like Sartana, which is in a Kiev-controlled area but close to regions run by Moscow-backed separatists.
