Friday's display of disrespect and decency from an American president and vice president was a disgrace to the world
The fact that the Donald Trump camp claims that Zelenskyy behaved inappropriately and did not show sufficient gratitude is not particularly surprising. That some in Europe think the same is bordering on the absurd.
Zelensky is the president of a country that is in a full-scale war with hundreds of thousands of dead and wounded Ukrainians – and with hundreds of cities and villages in ruins. Last week he was called a useless clown and a dictator. Is that what you call respect?
And anyone who didn't see that JD Vance – a representative of the pro-Russian, far-right wing of the party was just looking for an opportunity to create chaos should watch the show again. A vice president is not usually present at such meetings in the Oval Office. On Friday he was there. Exactly.
And so, Zelensky had almost no choice. He may regret some of his word choices and that he got a little adrenaline, but giving up $500 billion in natural resources without any security guarantees is not what he proposed. It would not have been a full deal anyway.
The biggest winners are now sitting quietly in Beijing.
Trump has just stepped on the wrong European cultural strings. Because what has happened in the last 1–2 weeks will be felt far beyond Ukraine, and may soon be seen in retrospect as a paradigm shift in the world structure and the further development of the world economy.
– We are working with Europe to create a solid foundation for working with the United States to achieve peace, said Zelensky after the meetings in London this Sunday.
