The first Ukrainian memorial in Norway

Ukrainian Ambassador Viacheslav Yatsiuk unveiled the first Ukrainian memorial to the Ukrainian effort in Norway during World War II on Saturday, May 14. This is the first Ukrainian memorial to be erected in Norway, despite the fact that Ukrainian soldiers made a heroic effort in the liberation of Norway and many sacrificed their lives.

It was the gravestone of the Ukrainian soldier Pavel Bortsjarov who was shot in 1942 in Lyngdal, which was retrieved from the forest and rebuilt in the center of Lyngdal. Now it stands as a symbol of the Ukrainian effort in the last world war with the information board in the center of the municipality.
The Ukrainian ambassador praised the Lyngdal municipality for erecting the memorial, and especially how much it meant to the Ukrainians who need protection and who now live in Lyngdal.

Ambassador Viacheslav Yatsiuk stated the following: - It is not long since Russia started its criminal war against Ukraine. Lyngdal municipality in Agder county became the first Norwegian municipality to decide to erect a memorial to pay tribute to the Ukrainians who lost their lives in Norway during World War II.

During his visit to Lyngdal, Viacheslav Yatsiuk paid tribute to the Ukrainian soldiers and members of the Norwegian resistance movement who fought against the Nazis during World War II.

The Ukrainian ambassador thanked the leadership led by Mayor Jan Kristensen and the people of Lyngdal municipality for their concrete support and solidarity with the Ukrainian people in their current heroic resistance against the Russian invaders.

– Ukraine's victory will also be Norway's victory, and the overwhelming support from Norwegian society plays a strong role in winning this war for Europe's freedom, said Viacheslav Yatsiuk at a conference in Lyngdal Cultural Center that was organized in connection with the unveiling of the Ukrainian World War II Memorial.

There is still a lack of a national memorial in Norway to the heroic efforts made by Ukrainian soldiers in Norway.

The Ambassador also visited a reception center for temporarily displaced people in Lyngdal, where he met his compatriots, approximately 300 Ukrainians, who had to flee their homes in Ukraine due to the Russian aggression.
