Ukrainian "Vikings" have arrived
The relationship between Ukraine (historically known as Gardarike) and the Norwegian Viking kings was characterized by strong ties through marriage, military cooperation and political asylum.
Kyiv was a central base for several of the most famous Norwegian kings.
The Viking Age linked Norway and Ukraine closely through trade routes along the Dnieper, where Norwegian kings such as Olaf Tryggvason, Olaf the Saint and Harald Hardråde found political alliances, exiles and spouses in the Kyivriket. Kyiv was a hub for Nordic settlers, and the Norwegian Viking king, Harald Hardråde, married the prince's daughter, Ellisiv, who became the Norwegian queen.
- Olav Tryggvason: According to the saga, he grew up in Kyiv.
- Olav Haraldsson (the Saint): Fled to Prince Yaroslav of Kyiv in 1028.
- Magnus the Good: Raised with Yaroslav.
- Harald Hardråde: Served as a mercenary, married Yaroslav's daughter Elisiv (Jelisaveta) and returned to Norway with great wealth.
The Ukrainian women's choir “Spivochi” na Lofoten will contribute with exciting Viking songs. The choir is led by Yuliia Yanko who was born in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv. Work has been put into finding the right music for a saga story, and it is both exciting and surprising that the choir will contribute. This will be the oldest story from Borge documented in the old Icelandic sagas.
Nikulás Hansen Daðason from Iceland will play the role of Olafur tvennumsbruni, and Birta Sólveig Söring Þórisdóttir will have the role of Áshildur herself, Ólafur's wife. She is currently playing at the Icelandic National Theatre. The Event, called🌻Summer in Borge🌻 is the 24 July at Borge church and 25 July at Tingvollen, Borgvær, both in Lofoten.
